A unique opportunity arose to create a new traditional Italian restaurant for Lucarelli and chef Aldo Zilli on the rooftop of Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge. The space, formerly home to Yo! Sushi, had remained dormant for years as part of the department store’s food market — offering the perfect canvas for a complete transformation.

Together with Lucarelli and Harvey Nichols, we conducted a detailed feasibility study to redefine the entire area and incorporate new back-of-house and service spaces. This led to the creation of a new open kitchen, designed as a central stage where food preparation becomes part of the dining experience. A real-flame pizza oven sits at its heart, celebrating the theatre and passion of Italian cuisine and bringing a sense of warmth and movement to the main dining hall.

Beyond the architectural design, we focused on operational flow, the sense of arrival, and the journey through the space — from entrance to seating. These routes are framed by a rhythmic sequence of arches, subtly revealed through lush planting and accentuated by decorative lighting and art. At the entrance, a bespoke mosaic tondo by artist Giulia Manzoni, designed in collaboration with Flair Studio, pays homage to the heritage of Italian craftsmanship and cuisine.

The overarching concept was to create an open garden atmosphere at the top floor — a refined, contemporary interpretation of an Italian courtyard. Every material, finish and light fitting was chosen to enhance the sense of intimacy and authenticity, ensuring that both guests and staff feel immersed in a coherent and welcoming environment.

Flair Studio acted as lead designer, coordinating the consultants, main contractor, kitchen equipment specialists, and joinery suppliers. We also developed several bespoke elements, including blue patina copper panels crafted with a specialist metalworker, which now define the restaurant’s distinctive visual identity.
